Texas A&M University-Central Texas Uncover Its Past
Located in the small town of Killeen, Texas, A&M University-Central Texas has a rich and diverse history. In 1973, community leaders decided they wanted a public university for the region, and through sheer will and determination, founded the American Technological University (ATU) despite a great deal of resistance from state government.
In 1989, ATU was absorbed into the University of Central Texas. That school morphed into a new branch campus of public Tarleton State University until 2009, when it became a stand-alone member of the Texas A&M University System. A&M-Central Texas is an upper-level institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees to a current population of more than 2,600 students.
